Did you know it is important in cold temperatures, to consume water. In the winter, the air is drier, while in the summer you’ll feel much more humidity in it. That humidity actually makes it easier on your body, when you breathe the cold air in the winter, your body has to work harder to humidify it and bring up the temperature, and anytime your body has to work harder at something, that usually means it needs more hydration to keep functioning properly.
Wear less layers
Perspiration is one of the top ways water exits our bodies. I’m not saying you should avoid sweating, but I know I’ve found myself in about 100 layers in the middle of winter and sweating profusely. It may not feel like you’re dehydrating when this happens because you’re not necessarily outside or doing a work out, but sweat is sweat, and if you’ve found yourself in this situation one too many times, you could be dehydrating yourself.
Avoid drinking cold water
Sometimes drinking ice cold water throughout the day in the winter sounds like a horrible idea. This is where room temperature water comes in. When the water is slightly warmer, your body doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain its internal temperature, which means the water you just drank lasts longer in your system.
Lessen your caffeine intake
All those hot teas and coffees you drink in the winter months definitely count towards maintaining proper hydration, so that’s the good news! The bad news is caffeine (and alcohol) can contribute to dehydration. If you can get by on a decaf coffee or green tea a few days a week, that can really help your body stay on track.
Snack on food with high-water content
You may not have considered that eating something can actually help you stay hydrated, too. If you’re not a fan of water and it’s really hard to force a gallon down every day, consider eating some high-water content fruits and vegetables like watermelon or broccoli. This option really is a win-win because now you’re getting lots vitamins and minerals as well as water.
